Constraints Constraints
are the meat and bones of Ou-X-Po (the collective name for Oulipo and
its various spinoffs). They are the first step towards making potential
a reality. In comics, constraints can govern everything from the number
or size of panels on a page to the iconic material used to tell a story.
Following are links to two lists of constraints. The first is the groundbreaking
first attempt by Oubapo co-founder Thierry Groensteen to come up with
a systematic classification of the different kinds of constraints that
can be applied to comics. The second list is a much more haphazard and
ongoing list of constraints that the creators of this web page have come
up with. Both
of these pages will be updated occasionally with illustrations and, in
the case of the second page, with new constraints. Thierry Groensteen's First Batch of Constraints |
