The Sands
is a story of a unsure man in perplexing surroundings. We follow Little
Hawk Troy as he journeys to the desert with his entomologist wife, Margie.
Hawk's story unfolds as he meets Fen the Riverboat Vegetable Seller,
Butsi The Boy King, and the mysterious musician and his son in the town
cafe.

Will Hawk's and Butsi's party thrive, or will the vengeful army intercept and destroy them? |
|||||||
|
|
These questions and others
are dealt with, but not necessarily answered as Hawk's story
continues and his confusion and frustration compound, both building
towards a blurry climax echoing Hawk's psyche that has left some readers
puzzled, and others wholly delighted. Black Candy artist Matt
Madden said about The Sands: "This is a really daring - and for me,
successful- bit of narrative experimentation that makes me wish there
was more stuff like this coming out."
