This course will look at the phenomenon of the migration of comic strips and stories from newspapers and comic books to computer-based distribution (and creation) on the World Wide Web. Starting with an historical overview of comic strips and stories, students will create characters, write stories and develop scenarios, learning to work within small- and large-scale story structures. Pen, brush and ink drawing, as well as writing and lettering will be explored. We will then look at preparing comics for distribution on the Internet, including a look at usability and Web standards, and simple software packages that allow for simplicity of updates for the non-programming artist. Lettering and coloring for the computer, using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, will also be covered, as well as a brief look at animated comics made with Macromedia Flash.

This course is primarily a comic strip and story (from soup to nuts) creating course. Computer access will be limited.

A note about the material list:

Most of the material list were recommended items, and not mandatory. For instance, a ruler, triangle, technical pens, computer items, etc are not mandatory.

The main things you WILL NEED are something to pencil with (pencils of any kind), something to sketch on (sketchbook or paper), something to ink with (dip pens, markers and/or brushes AND ink) and something to ink ON (bristol board.)

Pencils and sketchbooks are easy.

Inking- if you would like a recommendation for a specific dip pen, get a Hunt 102. This is extremely common, and perhaps the pen most used by professionals. It is stiff enough to offer lots of control but still flexible enough to get a good line. Brushes- Windsor and Newton Cirrus 1 or 2 is a good one. Most Windsor and Newtons are good. Princeton Art and Brush company make good ones too. Again, a round size 1 or 2 is a good size. Most people shy away from brushes and opt for pens, but for some people they wouldn't use anything but a brush, so you may want to experiment.

Bristol Board-
Plate or Smooth finish is probably what you want, as it SHOULDN'T bleed. Strathmore is the best brand. You may to have experiment to get your favorite, I'm sorry to say, and sometimes the ones that shouldn't bleed, do anyway. It's very frustrating. Some people choose VELLUM (or rough) which is better for brushes sometimes (it offers a slightly textured line -my wife uses vellum and brush on her site here: http://www.tomhart.net/leela/illustrationTiles.htm .) As I said, I use something called Borden and Riley Paris Bleedproof Paper For Pens which is basically smooth bristol board.

The Following comes from Scott Kurtz's PVP Online Links; (opinions are his. )

It is becoming increasingly more difficult to deny that webcomics are making a huge impact on the industry. The web has provided the comic book and comic strip artist an infinite canvas as well as an invaluable tool to expand the limits of their work and expose it to the masses. Below are links to some important destinations dedicated to expanding the community of comic books, comic strips, and webcomics.

Comicbookresources.com
- Weekly colums, content, reviews and news in the comic book industry. Be sure to check out Scott Shaws Oddball comics. Great fun, very imformative.

Comicon.com - The World's biggest online comic convention. Comicon.com is a hub of comic book professionals and fans alike. The Comicon message boards are the place to discuss all things related to the art and business of comic books (including one forum dedicated entirely to webcomics).

Comixpedia.com - A brand new site dedicated to webcomics news. Comixpedia.com keeps track of what the thousands of aspiring webcomic pioneers are up to. Watch this site grow!

Digitalwebbing.com - The source for comic book related websites. Features news, reviews and columns. Recently started publishing their own comic books. Good example of creators making it happen for themselves.

Herorealm.com - The comic book news and review site with a good edge to it. Herorealm shines by somehow getting interviews with the top comic book industry professionals, and they never pull punches.

Keenspot.com - Keenspot is the largest publisher of exclusive webcomics, generating over 50 million pageviews a month.

Moderntales.com - Modern Tales is the leading subscription-based webcomics publisher. Cartoonists whose work appears on Modern Tales include fairly well-known names from the independent print comics scene. Moderntales has spawned a couple sister sites including graphicsmash.com, Serializer.net, girlamatic.com andAmericanelf.com

Newsarama.com - Another great comic book news site. Newsarama brings you the latest from the world of comic books.

The Pulse - Although not a part of comicon.com proper, THE PULSE is comicons daily comics news page. The Pulse frequently posts about what's going on with webcomics, frequently profiling aspiring online creators.

Rocketboxcomics.com - small collection of web comic creators who have gathered their resources in order to create a place for web comic creators to ask questions, find information, and exchange ideas.

Sequential Tart - Jade Fontaine's favorite comic book site. A website about the comics industry, published by an eclectic band of women. Striving to bring you the latest comic book news, reviews and interviews while striving to raise awareness of women's influence in teh comic book industry.

Scottmccloud.com - Scott is well known as the uber-guru of webcomics. Author of both Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics. In the past I've disagreed with a lot of Mr. McCloud's ideas, but hey may yet prove me wrong. This is provacative stuff for anyone interested in the future of webcomics.

talkaboutcomics.com - The official forums for Moderntales.com, but also a great community for discussing the future of the medium and the business of webcomics.

World Famous Comics - Comic book news and information site which also hosts forums for some of comics hottest creators including Miek Allred, Dan Bereton, Frank Cho, Jeff Smith and others.

There are currently a few webcomic artists who have, through means of merchandise, online sales, donations, and pure determination made producing a webcomic their full time job. Their success is our success, and hopefully they represent a viable future for us all.
