I'll send you the titles. You can probably control panel them if you have time. Otherwise, I'll do it this weekend. But they are in there.

Wait, no - you have to add the new strips, because you know what the filenames are. Do that so I can give them titles!

The running in 97 looks great! Ha!
I'm gonna go put some more strips up on the control panel. Today's is the last one.

According to Googlism.com:
trunktown is a strip in the classic sense trunktown is reminiscent of humorous adventure newspaper strips from trunktown is a subscriber trunktown is pure genius

Caught up to 99. 100 is on my scanner. Woah!

Okay! Mayor of Cardboard Flats! Gotta think of a good mayor name. I'll get back to you.
Posted by Shaenon @ 07:15 PM EST

Or a burgermeister.
Haha. No, I like mayor the best.

Or a mayor.

Oh hell, you know I'm the slow one here! I'll keep feeding you strips as quickly as I can.
Maybe Cardboard Flats has a prime minister. Or a premier.

I haven't given the ruler of Cardboard Flats A LOT of thought, but I have given it some, and I can't shake these two notions:
That She (it should be a she) should either be completely original, dramatic, new crazy, or in some way connected to Vernielle. Like, her Mom, or maybe just with a lot of similar qualities to Vernielle. I don't know.
If it's her mom, then that relationship sort of echos Faustine's and the King's- this sort of rift between generations. I like that.
Let me know what you are thinking about it.

I think my slowness has caused us to become a week behind. Well, no longer 3 weeks ahead anyway. So gotta catch up.
I love the new ones!!!
Who is in charge of Cardboard Flats............?
Hmmm it needs some thought. A lot of thought. I'll get back to you.

Next question: Who is in charge of Cardboard Flats? We may have to draw this person. Is it better if he/she is extremely similar to the King, or extremely different?

"As long as we're behind her..." - Yes! That is much better! Okay, now I like it better. Draw that.
Yeah, I like 99 and 100 pretty well. They have what I'm starting to think of as the Trunktown rhythm, which I can't always get right. The strip that's up today is one of my favorites.
Next I think will be some strips with Hutch, Oswald, and the King, and then... the trebuchet!

99 is HILARIOUS! my fave in a while. And it doesn't even have Baldy! Today's is wonderful, too. I like this one. Everyone- Strip 100 is around the bend!

Yeah but I looked at it, and it's good to have that single strip of them running. Can you just explain the joke to me and maybe we can tweak it a bit? I mean- I get the joke, I just don't know if it makes either grammatical or logistical sense. Like if, they're following her, would he say, "it can't be worse than her?" Maybe there's a better way to phrase it, like, so long as we're behind her I think we're safe!"
Hey- that's pretty funny. What about a spin on that?
T
PS- When's the big date? When I asked Leela to marry me, I figured it would mean someday in the next 10 years. I had no idea it meant "ok let's get cracking!" Oy vey!

We can just cut 97 if it doesn't make sense. It's not crucial to the plot or anything. I'll send you more tonight.

I put 96 and 98 up there (fun!) I drew most of 97, but I'm still not sure I get the punchline. Do you think it's delivered right? I feel that since I don't understand it, it's hard for me to draw the appropriate faces, et al. Any thoughts on that?
These are great though. I had a lot of time drawing the boys running, especially from your roughs, where you had them bending backwards. I tend to draw running bending forwards, so this was great to nail down. You know your stuff!

Yeah, it's a net - my drawing sucks.
Actually, either "her" or "here" would make about equal sense. I meant "her" but maybe "here" is better.
Everything else is fine.

Huzzah- the new sketches are good. I'm going to change panel 3 of 96 to be Oswald exclaiming "this way Hutch" with hutch retorting "Yeah I've got it, Oswald." or something.
Does "it can't be any worse than her" mean "here" or do I not get what you're trying to say?
In the third one- did Frick nail them in a net? Should we show some hint of that happening in panel 3? I think so.
This is all real fun!!!!!!!!

Oh, man, that looks awesome! Okay, I'll send you some more tonight. I know what's got to happen for the next few strips, anyway. Hey, and storywise, we're almost up to the mysterious unnumbered strip at the end!
Posted by Shaenon @ 11:59 AM EST

|
Ok the new one is 95 so renumber!
And I had so much fun drawing that one. It really rocks. I gave Frick an ordinary black and decker drill. Not for any good reason, but cause I was confused about your email and never settled it in my brain so that's what I drew. It was fun though.

Yeah, you're right. Faustine must escape!
Posted by Shaenon @ 06:49 PM EST
|
|
But what happens when the King and Faustine see each other? You can't contain that! What would happen?
Posted by Tom @ 12:30 PM EST
|
|
Yeah, now that I've drawn that, the next strip has to be Frick presenting the prisoners. He will utilize his human-statue powers later. Or maybe right now for a gag, but in earnest later on. Yes, this works! I will draw some stuff!
Then the war revs up. That's the next part I have to draw.
Posted by Shaenon @ 12:16 PM EST

|
This new sketch you sent is good. The next strip clearly has to be Frick wildly bringing the new lot of prisoners to the statue king right?
or maybe not finding the king cause he's playing statue somewhere. that seems best, or else all the statue training was for naught.
i like the big drill idea. still trying to think of things for you.
i envisioned loads of people crossing the river between cardboard flats and trunktown, but who and why i don't know.

The new strips look good! Now I have to write more. I've reached a bit of an impasse; all the characters are lined up, and I need to decide who to set off first. If you have any ideas or input they would be much appreciated.

All caught up. I really choked 94. But 93 is good. I'm getting closer on Vernielle and Fen both.

"Trunktown is reminiscent of humorous adventure newspaper strips from the early half of the twentieth century, though contemporary cartoonists and critics disagree on which ones. This is not to say it is on a par with those greats, yet it is not meant to belittle Garrity and Hart's achievement either, since it is ultimately its own thing of its own era." -Sam Henderson, Magic Whistle

"Wrestle the Grizzle" is pretty good though!
Posted by Tom @ 01:20 PM EST

I misspelled "your" too. I'll fix them tonight. I like twisting Fens words a bit when I get the roughs. He's fun to write. You've been doing great on this all.
Posted by Tom @ 01:18 PM EST

Dude! You mistyped "grizzly" in the second panel.
I love the way Fen talks. I really really do.
And you found a picture of a trebuchet! Okay, we are totally set.

Like the new ones? I think Vernielle is getting closer.
I feel like I'd take a three year sabattical with the 5 days I missed at APE. It's like the characters are all demanding to be redesigned (Faustine has changed a bit already this week) and I am forcing myself to reassess what's working and what isn't.
Oh ! I drew a picture of the young king- I have to show you later.

Yes, now you have to draw a trebuchet! Hahahahaha!

Today's strip (2/11) is one of my favorites, drawing wise. I love all the gags.
I can't believe you're putting a Trebuchet into the later strips. Does that mean I have to find out what one really looks like?

Yeah, I like the new strips. But I'm drawing some new ones that are better AND will actually bring us closer to the end of the storyline!
Sorry to be incommunicado for so long. I came down with the flu last week and was sick all through the weekend and Monday. I'm back at work now, feeling sniffly but much better.
